Removal of Notches on the Gum Line

Removing Notches at the Gum Line

Before

Issue and Solution

Notches along the gum line, called abfractions, are caused by stress at the gum line. This can happen due to repeated grinding and clenching of the jaw. Abfractions are not only a cosmetic defect but can also be uncomfortable for the patient. They can be removed in a fairly simple and quick procedure by your dentist.

Replacing a Non-Savable Front Tooth with an Implant

Issue and Solution

When teeth have very large cavities or very larger older fillings, we have to crown (cap) the tooth. This is because we can no longer effectively “stuff” or fill the tooth with filling material and expect it to last a long time. A crown protects the tooth from the outside, taking on the chewing responsibilities and becoming the new shell for the tooth. In this example, this patient had a large cavity with an older filling. The front tooth was crowned and custom-shaded and custom-shaped to match his other natural teeth.

Issue and Solution

We can often improve the function and appearance of teeth using composite bonding (tooth-colored fillings). Over time, teeth can chip, old fillings can stain or break, or new cavities can form on teeth. In this example, the front tooth was not heavily broken down, but you can see the “wear and tear.” Composite bonding was used to match the color of the natural tooth and create an esthetic, healthy result.

Replacing Missing Front Teeth with Implants

Replacing Missing Front Teeth with Implants

Before

Issue and Solution

Congenitally missing teeth are adult teeth that never formed. As seen in this picture, the lateral incisors are some of the more common teeth that can be congenitally missing. Because this patient had enough bone height and bone width in these areas, they were a candidate for implant surgery.  Here, the teeth were replaced by implants with custom-shaped and custom-colored crowns.

Issue and Solution

A bridge is used to replace missing teeth and stays permanently in your mouth. It is cemented onto the two anchor teeth (abutments) like crowns that are all linked together. Bridges can be made for front teeth and back teeth. It is a great option for when patients do not want to or cannot undergo implant surgery. In this case, this patient had an old bridge that incorporated 4 teeth; they wanted it replaced with a modern material. The new bridge creates a more natural appearance, and they were thrilled with the result.

Changing the Size and Shape of Teeth with Veneers

Issue and Solution

Veneers are thin, custom-shaped, custom-colored, bonded porcelain. They enable us to manipulate the appearance of your teeth with more conservative drilling practices. In this case, you can see that this patient had "peg laterals" (under-grown/smaller teeth), which is a common condition that leads to size discrepancies and spacing. These teeth were treated with veneers and custom color shading. The new veneers create a brighter and more full smile.

No Longer Afraid to Smile

Before

Issue and Solution

This young lady was afraid to smile and didn’t like the ‘fangs’ or her worn down front teeth. We not only corrected her bite to allow a lifetime of normal function, we also corrected for the extra wear on her front teeth. This allowed us to use composite bonding to sculpt a very natural youthful smile for her that matches her age. In less than a year’s time, we brought to life her new smile and she hasn’t stopped smiling since.

Issue and Solution

This patient found that her porcelain crowns of over 40 years were cracking and discoloring with time and had begun to show dark lines as gums receded with age. She wanted a more youthful and natural look. She underwent in-office teeth whitening, followed by composite bonding and 2 porcelain crowns which are undetectable to the human eye. The results are undeniably natural and beautiful.
